On January 24th, 2010, over four hundred science teachers, researchers, policy makers,
students and their parents thronged to New York University's Kimmel Centre for a
education for all young people.
The Jhumki Basu Foundation was launched at the symposium and a panel comprising
of the following organizations announced their unique partnership:
- Ashoka Changemakers
Jhumki Basu Prize Challenge
- Jhumki Basu Science Education
Institute at NYU
- Science Playground at
NY Hall of Science
- Sci Ed Innovators online community
Dr. Lee Morin, NASA Astronaut, enthralled the audience
with pictures and his space-walk experience. Carlos
Dominguez, Cisco Senior VP, provided a stimulating vision
of technologies that will transform classrooms in the 21st
century.
During a post-symposium reception, ten NY area schools
displayed their projects in a educational and fun Science
Expo while the NASA booth was packed with kids and
adults viewing scientific demonstrations.
Jhumki Basu Foundation announced it will build the Sci Ed Innovators web platform to create an on-line collaborative science education community to work on ways to achieve equal access for all to science education. Community participants will meet annually at the Sci Ed Innovators Conference.

The program for the event was built upon the vision and
pioneering work of Prof Jhumki Basu who dreamed of a
world where all youth are scientifically literate and use
science to transform their lives.
The day was energized by the excitement of over one
hundred middle and high school students who
enthusiastically participated in the program. Speakers paid
tribute to Jhumki's remarkable achievements in her short
career and pointed out the critical need for innovative
techniques to engage students from all backgrounds into
science.
